IGNORANCE

When I opened the door to my room, I saw that the candle on my nightstand was on its last flicker before burning out. It was as if it had waited until I entered before flickering its last bit of light.

The twins were sound asleep in their beds, chests rising and falling in sync. Amara lay in her bed, wrapped in her comforter, still recovering from the traumatic events of earlier today.

I opened my drawer and retrieved my nightgown, trying not to disturb anyone with the rustling fabric. After removing my top and loosening my skirt, I slipped into bed and let out a sigh of relief as the cool sheets enveloped me. Another day gone in this strange place, filled with guilt and uncertainty about our fate.

As I emerged from the fog of trauma, my body ached, and every movement was a painful reminder of what had happened. As I stretched my arms, I winced at the bruises on my arms from Hunter's violent hold on me.

I was feeling the bruises on my thighs when he needed them to move in the direction he wanted. My hand reached down to feel how it was sensitive to the touch. Earlier, in the bath, I had tried to ignore the evidence of his abuse, but now, in my bedroom, I couldn't escape it.

I straightened up in my bed, shaking with emotions I had been repressing to keep going. It was a tidal wave of pain and despair, leaving me feeling alone.

All I wanted was my family, especially my sister, by my side. She always knew how to encourage me and stay strong during challenging situations. Her words were like a lifeline, but she wasn't here now when I needed her the most. As I thought back on all the times I had imagined Brant next to me, It only made the ache in my chest worse that I couldn't conjure up the memory of my sister.

I felt a gentle hand on my foot and gasped in surprise to see Amara standing beside me with a pained expression. I hadn't heard her come down from the bunk bed above us. She knelt beside me, taking my hands in hers.

I saw the deep red and purple mark on her chest where the electric stick had struck her. I brushed back the top of her gown with shaking fingers to reveal more injuries beneath. My heart broke for her and for everything we had both endured at the hands of our abuser.

My voice caught in my throat as I tried to apologize. I fought back tears, not wanting to disturb the sleeping twins nearby. My whole body shook with emotions that I couldn't control.

Amara's grip tightened around my hand, providing a comforting anchor. "Don't be sorry," her eyes she murmured. "I've been through worse, especially with people I thought loved me."

"I don't know if I can do this anymore," I admitted, feeling defeated.

"You can do it," she urged. "You're stronger than you think." Amara's lips turned up, seeing the change in my eyes.
